Abstract
We proceed from the assumption that the scope for setting up organisational structures has increased decisively with the recent development of telecooperation. Due to their ability to overcome the restrictions of time and space, telecooperation systems also promise to enable the virtualisation of workplaces, project teams, business units and even entire companies. However, research carried out in 18 large companies in Germany has shown that at the present time the potential of telecooperation for use in virtual forms of work and organisation is not being sufficiently exploited and that in practise the use of this technology is accompanied by significant difficulties. This paper presents the results of this empirical research, consisting of findings on the degree of usage and the current level of use of telecooperation systems in business. Based on this information, some conclusions are then drawn concerning the design of creative virtual organisations. Proceeding from the criteria of h uman design of work and organisation, telecooperation can be used to design creative, virtual organisations.
