Device (1) for producing silicon blocks comprises a container (2) for receiving a silicon melt with a base (4), an inner side, an outer side (7) and a central longitudinal axis (8). The base exhibits an extension perpendicular to the central longitudinal axis, and at least two regions with different heat transfer coefficients via the extension. An independent claim is also included for producing the silicon blocks, comprising: providing the container; providing the silicon melt into the container; and removing heat through the base of the container to cool the silicon melt in such a manner that an inhomogeneous temperature-distribution is at least temporarily adjusted in the region of the base on the inner side of the container.
