Acoustic design of sports halls and indoor swimming pools
Abstract

In more than 30,000 sports halls and indoor swimming pools, teachers and their students are dependent an good acoustic teaching and learning conditions every day. A tolerable noise level as well as undisturbed communication and concentration are essential to ensure safety and health and to realize pedagogical concepts. In practice, however, this is still far from being the case. Both the assessments of PE teachers and the in-situ measurements indicate substantial deficits. lt is too loud, acoustic disturbances are annoying and associated with significant strains. In many places there is a high level of dissatisfaction regarding the acoustic conditions. However, building and room acoustics often da not meet today's requirements, neither in new nor in refurbished buildings. And yet, there are many good examples and solutions to prove that the demands can be met properly. Nevertheless, there is still a substantial need for further information, development and research. ln practice, a balanced combination of acoustic, construction, and physical building measures in terms of design and cost-efficiency has proven beneficial in many ways.
