From Embedded Systems to Systems-on-Silicon. Nearly all applications of microelectronics today have their roots in embedded systems. Up to now the systems consisting of hardware and software can be built and debugged relatively easily by means of emulators and breadboarding. However continuing miniaturization at the one hand and growing complexity at the other hand call for new methods and tools during the development.
