Title
Designing for increased comfort and energy efficiency in buildings by utilising low exergy systems
Abstract
There is public awareness of the need for so-called energy saving measures. But, according to the first law of thermodynamics, i.e. the energy conservation principle, it is neither possible to save energy nor consume it. To fully understand what and where something is consumed, it is necessary to use the concept of exergy and to further optimize energy flows in the built environment. Low exergy systems, which utilize small temperature differences between the HVAC systems and the room space, allow for a more comfortable indoor environment, and, at the same time, a more efficient use of energy in buildings and often increased indoor thermal comfort. This paper describes and gives an overview of ongoing project activities in this field. Conclusions have been drawn from a more holistic point of view in regards to a cluster of research activities.
