Title

On the feasibility of hybrid communication for L4 driving in rural areas in Germany

Abstract
According to German legislation, driverless automated vehicles on SAE automation level 4 or higher need a permanent connection to a control center. Especially in rural areas, relying on public mobile connection via the cellular network may not be sufficient, as not all operation areas are covered. Here, we consider hybrid communication based on Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) and cellular networks and present measurement data from a real-world use case. It is shown that V2X does not solve the associated challenges and other modalities of communication are required.
