The construction of digital exchanges using unit modules

The authors define the concept of a "service independent" unit module which could be used in central and satellite exchanges for digital communication systems. Such a module was built as a project in the laboratory using discrete circuit elements. This was used as a pilot study for the application of VLSI techniques to the system. The paper concludes with an economic analysis.
