Abstract
Background: With the ongoing decarbonization of energy systems in the EU and the effects of climate change, the availability of electricity is becoming an increasingly complex task: On the generation side, coal, gas and nuclear power plants are progressively being replaced by decentralized renewable energy sources such as wind, photovoltaics and hydropower. [1] At the same time, on the consumer side, the transition from oil and gas heating to heat pumps is gaining momentum.[2] In addition, an increasing number of summer days in Europe is leading to a growing demand for air conditioning.[3, 4] These changes are resulting in an increase and a shift in individual electricity demand over time.
