PHBV/PHB Extrusion Coating on Paper - Market Ready Yet?

• Extrusion coating of paper with PHBV was successfully shown. • Hurdles for industrial implementation: High polymer cost, low elongation at break, low drawability and therefore high minimum coating weight (compared to PE-LD). The coating material cost will be estimated ≥ 5x higher compared to PE-LD. • From view of science interesting research field are: Melt strength increase, increase of drawability and better understanding of extensional viscosities. • Viable application scenarios: Snack packagings were littering occurs and where microplastic accumulation is an issue.
