Title

Long-wavelength VCSELs for optical access networks

Abstract
Optical fibers are beginning to find their place in the emerging broadband access networks. In order to support area wide fiber infrastructures as a prerequisite for rapid FTTx 1 implementations on a large scale, significant cost reductions are required for all network elements and in particular for key components such as lasers. Long-Wavelength Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (LW-VCSELs) are expected to meet the technological requirements for a widespread deployment in short and very short reach applications while ensuring simple manufacturability at minimum costs. This paper details technical aspects of LW-VCSELs and their applicability as light sources in optical access networks.
