Title Supplement
Innovation management for the automotive industry
Abstract
Due to major chances in the area of production of most well-known car manufacturer the automotive suppliers are forced to assume the role of a system supplier and therefore to increase their R&D activities. In this article a systematic approach is presented to increase the efficiency of R&D by implementing innovative projects into a "strategic roadbook", focussing on the special demands of system suppliers in the automotive industry. A portfolio concept is developed to evaluate alternative projects by integrating internal and external criteria. Internally the attainment of competences and the utilization of synergies are relevant aspects, seen externally through the eyes of the customer an innovation approach and continuous improvement of existing products are needed. Finally a sample of innovation projects is evaluated with the help of the portfolio and consequences for the innovation strategy are determined.
