Ecomorphology of the insect head with a focus on the mouthparts of adults

This chapter reviews our current knowledge about the ecomorphology of the insect head with a focus on the mouthparts and the head capsule. Research about the insect head is dominated by studies on the morphology with comparably few studies focused on integrating morphology with its relationship to the environment. We present a formalized literature survey to identify understudied insect orders in entomological studies of the last decades and summarize qualitative and quantitative works dealing with aspects of the ecomorphology of the insect head for each insect order.
