Title

Security and privacy challenges in modern surveillance systems

Abstract
This work identifies the security and privacy challenges for modern surveillance systems, which are closely related to existing and arising technology trends, and to the legal background. Important differences and similarities between the legal situation in continental Europe, the UK and the USA are therefore pointed out and changes to legislation that can enhance data protection in future surveillance systems are purposed. Modern installations are complex systems and existing mechanisms, methods from related research areas and new solutions must be combined to ensure security and privacy. Promising approaches are presented and it is shown why they are still insufficient. Finally solutions for privacy enforcement and secure sensor integration in the semi-autonomous surveillance system NEST, developed at the Fraunhofer IITB, are presented.
