State of the art in flexible manufacturing system design

All over the world the number of FMSs is actually increasing. This paper describes the principal structure of such FMSs, and a method to model their functionality and topology in a hierarchical way. Steps of system introduction are designated. The need for higher qualification of operators-induced by their increasing responsibility-is shown.
