Materials progress: Multiple ceramic layers keep Co/WC knife edges sharper

A team of German researchers developed multiple ceramic layers consisting mainly of titanium nitride reinforced with nanomaterials to coat knife blades made of tungsten carbide and cobalt. To prevent the thin hard layer from splitting away from the body on cutting, the researchers harden its surface and thus increase the bonding between the two materials.
