Towards Green Video: Energy-Saving Potentials in Streaming

Abstract
The widespread adoption of digital media, particularly video streaming, has introduced technical complexities and raised concerns about energy efficiency across the streaming supply chain. Video streaming devices have become an integral part of our daily lives, providing access to visual content on various devices, from handheld gadgets to large TV screens. However, their pervasive presence also contributes significantly to energy consumption. This research paper addresses the challenges associated with energy efficiency in video streaming by proposing methods for efficient, reproducible, and reliable energy measurements on streaming devices. To achieve this, we introduce a framework designed for automated energy measurements of video streams. Through experiments, we analyze the energy consumption of streaming devices using a predefined set of reference content. Our goal is to identify the most influential factors affecting power consumption and derive practical methods to enable more sustainable and efficient streaming practices.
