Title
Model-Based Systems Engineering Maturity Models - A Systematic Mapping Study
Abstract
Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), as a logical progression from document-based systems engineering (SE), presents challenges for organizations in terms of both implementation and application. To ensure long-term success, MBSE activities and capabilities must be transparently recorded and evaluated to check whether goals are being achieved and to identify areas for improvement. This paper therefore presents a Systematic Mapping Study (SMS) analyzing studies for MBSE maturity models. The aim of this study is to examine the existing research activities in this field and identify any gaps. The study is based on three research questions. This involves analyzing the proportion of maturity models in SE/MBSE literature. 12 studies for assessing the maturity of (SE and) MBSE capabilities and activities in organizations are reviewed in detail and mapped according to a classification. The SMS identified a focus on Fixed-Level Maturity Models (FLMM) based on a combination of sources and principles. The extant literature on the subject is wide-ranging, and there is no consensus on the scope for a MBSE maturity model. The results of this study provide a basis for the development of a more comprehensive MBSE maturity model.
