Title
Polymeric Electrochromics
Abstract
This chapter gives an overview of the most relevant research and developments toward industrial applications in the field of polymeric electrochromic (EC) materials. In scientific literature, several reports, book chapters, and review articles on the state-of-the-art of electrochromic polymers (ECPs) have been published. While the properties and performance of ECPs and small-scale devices made thereof are well developed, the major challenges lie in the efficient manufacturing of high-quality coatings in industrial processes and device engineering. For most industrial applications the color of EC devices is most relevant when it comes to the design and visual appearance. Opportunities for future developments are application scenarios in which energy-harvesting technologies (e.g., photovoltaics) are combined with energy-saving technologies (e.g., batteries, EC devices). Especially for the application in architectural or automotive glazing, the combination of (O)PV and EC has major advantages for increasing the energy efficiency by using sustainable power resources.
