Title
Entropy-Stabilised Ceramics as Corrosion-Resistant Coatings in Industrial Kilns
Abstract
A corrosion-resistant coating for refractories of a continuous roller kiln for the production of ceramic tiles has been developed. This development was part of the EU project FORGE and has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation program under Grant agreement 958457. In a first step suitable coating materials had to be developed. Entropy-stabilised ceramics should be used as coating materials. These materials are relatively new and possess a variety of promising properties, including strong corrosion stability. A combination of Machine Learning (ML) and high throughput experiments was used for the development of the entropy-stabilised ceramics. A large number of bulk samples with different elemental compositions were prepared from oxide powder mixtures to form entropy-stabilised ceramics and subsequently characterised by XRD, CT, SEM and EDS. The results were used to select a suitable coating material for the development of a corrosion-resistant coating. Coatings were applied on refractories using a slurry coating technique and corrosion tests were carried out by placing coated samples in a roller kiln under real operating conditions.
