Abstract
Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) has the potential to revolutionize scientific work. However, a largescale structured overview that identifies use cases of GenAI in science and research, across disciplines, has not yet been conducted. This study addresses this gap by conducting a structured literature review of 204 papers. From the review, we identified seven categories (Ideation, Literature Review, Methodology, Data Collection, Programming, Data Analysis, and Writing) with a total of 118 use cases. This paper presents an overview over the literature in tutorial-like style, outlines opportunities for researchers to integrate GenAI into their work, and provides a foundation for the detailed investigation and implementation of specific use cases.
