Reflective computing - naturally artificial

Abstract
Nature has always been a major source of inspiration for technical developments. The more man understands the multiplicity of its forms and complexity of its functioning, the more he attempts to borrow from its fascinating effectiveness. The phenomenon of adaptation belongs to most challenging but also most difficult ones to re-create. This task requires not only new techniques but a thorough understanding of the phenomenon as well. Reflective computing is a novel paradigm that by mimicking the process of adaptation creates control systems naturally integrated into everyday surroundings. The major goal of a reflective system is to gain awareness about individuals being involved and to act appropriately, self-tuning its functioning to the benefit of the users. Reflective systems adapt to bo th social and individual circumstances interacting with people in an instinctive and non explicit manner. The techniques and methods to achieve spontaneous man-machine interactions are discussed as well as possible impacts of the approach, taking into account both advantages and latent risks that may go beyond the initial intentions.
