Title

Surface engineering by microstructuring processes

Title Supplement
Presentation held at SIG Structured and Freeform Surfaces, 19th - 20th November 2014, Padova
Other Title
Oberflächengestaltung durch Mikrostrukturierungsprozesse
Abstract
Properties of technical surfaces can be systematically engineered through appropriate microstructuring processes. Both intentions and applied machining processes are very manifold. This paper will describe ways for functional optimisation of technical surfaces with elements in design, simulation, experimental manufacturing and characterisation and present selected microstructuring processes for the reduction vs. the increase of friction and the optimisation of ply adhesion. Processes adressed are Jet-ECM and a two-stage vibration-assisted turning process for friction reduction as well as a new turn-milling process to increase static friction of surfaces for friction-locked joints. Furthermore, adjusted milling strategies to enhance adhesion of multilayer-coatings are investigated. Based on recent results the scope of further research will be addressed.
