Insights from the Morgenstadt Global Smart Cities Initiative
Abstract
In this report we present an overarching summary of the climate risk and resilience assessments conducted between 2019 and 2022 in the frame of the Morgenstadt Smart Cities Global Initiative, with a focus on Kochi (India), Piura (Peru), and Saltillo (Mexico). In the first section we present the three cities’ profiles, as well as major climate-related risks and vulnerabilities. In the second section we highlight different adaptation measures and governance best practices, accompanied by specific examples of actions undertaken in the three different contexts.
The publication is intended as a call to action and guidance for policy makers, scholars, practitioners, and citizens to develop more local solutions and strategies to be prepared for the challenges derived from climate change. Moreover, it introduces a methodology that can be replicated in other cities to better understand climate-related risks and vulnerabilities and increase resilience to the respective impact. Finally, it provides insights into different implementation projects in middle- and low-income countries which aim at harmonizing the objectives of the Paris Agreement and the Agenda 2030 when tackling climate change issues.
