Abstract
Rapid Prototyping techniques like Stereolithography permit complex models, samples and prototypes to be manufactured quickly, solely on the basis of CAD-data without the use of molds or tools. One characteristic common to all Rapid Prototyping methods is that the workpiece is shaped not by removing material as happens in manufacturing operations involving cutting, but by adding it. A further characteristic is that the workpiece is built up, layer by layer, during the manufacturing process. Parts with complicated shapes, even those with undercuts and cavities, can thus be created within a few hours. The possibilities and limitations of the Rapid Prototyping method currently in most common use. Stereolithography will be discussed in the following contribution. An account will also be given of the results of development work already undertaken to increase process efficiency as well as current development trends concerning new areas of application.
