Title
Towards Resilient Cybersecurity in IoBT: Aligning Defense in Depth with CIA-CAP Constraints
Abstract
The implementation of Defense in Depth in the Internet of Battlefield Things (IoBT) environments presents critical challenges due to the inherent complexity of distributed, resource-constrained, and adversarial operational contexts. This article explores the multidimensional tensions between cybersecurity goals, defined by the Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability (CIA) triad, and the architectural limitations imposed by the Consistency, Availability, and Partition Tolerance (CAP) theorem in distributed systems. It examines the need to adapt traditional Defense in Depth (DiD) strategies for IoBT systems by considering temporary connectivity, edge computing, and autonomous decision-making. Therefore, it introduces a framework based on CIA-CAP mappings to enhance security by enabling secure recovery, maintaining data integrity in inconsistent environments, and preserving confidentiality under network degradation. The study connects theoretical models with practical operational needs to strengthen security in future battlefield networks.
