PAPR reduction in OFDM using selected mapping with adaptive clipping at the transmitter, and sparse reconstruction at the receiver
Abstract
This paper presents an approach to cope with the problem of high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. A generalization of selected mapping (SLM) is considered which applies additional signal processing before selecting a candidate. The presented scheme combines SLM and clipping in an adaptive way. Allowing an affordable PAPR, which might be exceeded with very small probability, the proposed method aims at minimizing the instantaneous number of clipped peaks per OFDM frame to limit the resulting transmit signal distortion. Using Compressed Sensing based algorithms which account for the potential variation of the number of clips per frame, this strategy directly translates into an improved receiver-side peak reconstruction compared to clipping a fixed number of peaks in every OFDM frame. It is shown that in this way a receiver-side bit error probability reduction is achieved while guaranteeing a maximum PAPR at the transmitter.
