Title
Experimental and numerical investigations of the failure behavior of glass targets under impact loading by rigid projectiles
Other Title
Experimentelle und numerische Untersuchungen des Widerstandsverhaltens von Glaszielen bei Beschuß mit starren Projektilen
Abstract
Investigations of the mechanical behavior of glass targets under impact loading are performed. Tungsten carbide projectiles with an L/D-ratio of 3.15 were fired against glass targets of various thicknesses. The experimental observations show that the projectile perforates the targets without erosion and failure of the projectile material. The residual velocity of the projectile and the bulging of the rear surface of the glass targets are measured. The penetration process and the interaction of projectile and target are analyzed by numerical simulation. The DRUCKER-PRAGER yield condition describes the begin of yielding appropriately.
