The advantages of Laser Surface Treatment, precicely controlable energy input, low thermal load to the components, fine grained structures, suitability for on-line process control and flexibility are discussed for the most important applications, removal and structuring of thin surface layers, transforrnation hardening and remelting and modification of composition by alloying, cladding and dispersing. Some aspects of beam guiding and beam shaping and processing control in laser surface treatment are discussed.
