Abstract
This paper presents the results of investigations carried out to determine the fatigue life of welded structures with and without residual stresses under constant and variable amplitudes. The tests were carried out with longitudinally stiffened flat specimens welded to have tensile residual stresses; to determine the fatigue strength without residual stresses the specimens were heat treated and stress relieved. The results show that the residual stresses influecnce the fatigue strength significantly only in the case of high-cycle constant amplitude loads; for all other loading conditions the influence is not significant.
