Abstract
Film extrusion was performed with biodegradable polymers filled with natural cellulose. Different compositions of poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB) and polybutyrate adipate terephthalate (PBAT) were blended in a torque rheometer under addition of 0 - 3 wt.-% natural mesocarp cellulose rich particles from the babassu plant (Orbignya phalerata sp, Mart. [Arecaceae]) and subsequently processed in a film extruder. Retardation of crystallization upon addition of babassu particles as well as suitable mechanical and vapor barrier properties were found. These cost-effective cellulose PHB/PBAT composites may be further optimized to substitute not degradable synthetic standard materials for food, agricultural and general packing.
