Failure criteria for CFRP composites in the cryogenic regime

Abstract
The present contribution is concerned with the assessment and validation of composite failure criteria in the cryogenic thermal regime. For this purpose, an experimental test campaign on UD coupon specimens has been performed. This test campaign was complemented by tests on demonstrator specimens featuring multidirectional stacking sequences with holes and tapered sections. The specimens were tested at ambient temperature and in a liquid Helium environment. Pucks failure criterion was found to provide a good prediction of first ply failure in both environments.
