Title

Smart energy

Abstract
This chapter talks about smart energy in a nanoelectronic-enabled sector and its societal challenges. It discusses viable technical measures starting with the evolution of the energy supply caused by environmental and societal ambitions and the resulting need for smart energy systems. The chapter explains the semiconductor key products for smart energy systems and their technological requirements. Nanoelectronics as well as micro-and power-electronics as key enabler for smart energy. The future goal of the energy revolution is a carbon neutral, sustainable and efficient, but also affordable energy supply based on renewable energies. Besides the multienergy smart grid, also microenergy grids are of high interest in the energy revolution. The term smart energy comprises all intelligent technologies of energy generation, energy storage, consumption, and control. Energy management is based on data acquisition, on status estimation, and a reliable information and communication technology (ICT).
