Transmission of digital TV and sound signals
Quality requirements for the transmission of digital TV and sound signals are continuously increasing. However, during the transmission of digital signals over noisy channels errors occur, that can be eliminated at the receiver only by means of channel coding. An equivalent procedure for noise reduction in the transmission of analogue signals does not exist. The author explains how an efficient error protection system with an acceptable amount of hardware can be performed applying about 3 % redundancy. The system corrects random as well as burst errors and detects uncorrectable error patterns with high probability.
