Experiences with a hexapod milling machine
Abstract
For some years the situation in tool manufacture and mould-making has been marked by an increasing variety of products and a decrease in run sizes in production together with simultaneous demands for higher quality. As a consequence, there is a need in tool manufacture and mould-making, for machine tools which substantially increase productivity, on the one hand through higher feed rates and, on the other hand, through higher dimensional and geometric precision as well as a better surface finish. Finishing is frequently carried out using a three-axis high-speed milling machine. Simultaneous 5-axis high-speed machining is not possible, however, with the conventional machine designs. The milling experiences obtained so far clearly show the superiority of the Mikromat 6X HEXA in respect of axis dynamic as well as feed control at extreme reversal points. On several reference examples, it was confirmed that reductions in processing time of up to 20 per cent with constant precision could be obtained. Through optimal use of the milling machine at the machining station, an improvement in accuracy and surface quality as well as a reduced tool wear was recorded.
