Experimental and Simulative Investigation of Thermomechanical Loads in the Cutting Zone by Machining X30CrMoN-15-1 Steel with CBN tools

Abstract
The X30CrMoN-15-1 steel is one of the most important steels in the rolling bearing production, which generates considerable interest with regard to machining. In this work, the orthogonal cutting of X30CrMoN-15-1 steel with CBN tools was studied. The thermomechanical loads in the cutting zone were experimentally investigated with different cutting parameters. Based on the empirical results, two numerical simulation models, friction and material models were developed, inverse calibrated and verified by comparing cutting forces and workpiece temperature. The simulation results revealed a good agreement with the experimental results and provided a theoretical basis for predicting the workpiece quality.
