Title

VITRAS - virtual fire simulation

Abstract
As a result of the VITRAS project, the ZGDV e.V. Rostock developed an interactive virtual simulator for exploring emergency training processes. A shipboard fire fighting training scenario arose of the collaboration with the R&D institute for Save Shipping and Security Technology, ISV, which developed the conceptual framework for the fire simulation. The scenario is located in a ship engine room and simulates a fire breakout. The fire has to be extinguished by flooding the engine room with CO2. The scenario uses distributed applications connected by HLA/RTI and is able to drive a multi-screen stereoscopic virtual reality environment. In a second step smoke was added to the VR-environment by extending the VR-system with a particle system.
