Title

Renewable hydrogen and its role in the future energy system

Abstract
Sustainable hydrogen (H2) and its derivatives are expected to play a relevant role in almost all scenarios of the future energy system. The main driver behind this is the targeted reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In the future, H2 and its derivatives will be used particularly in applications where direct electrification is not possible or only possible with difficulty. Most scenarios assume that H2 produced from electrolysis based on renewable electricity will dominate in the medium and long term. The potential for this already exists, but development is still in its infancy and some barriers still need to be overcome.
