Title
Resource management in UMTS
Abstract
The UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication Systems) provides common network access to both voice and packet switching techniques. In a voice connection the QoS (Quality of Service) is guaranteed according to the GSM principle by an assigned PCM channel to a connection. The quality of service for data transmission is based on the applied TCP/IP protocol using best efforts. Differentiated resource management should be supported depending on the required and subscribed QoS parameters. Therefore, the best effort packet transmission protocol should be investigated for ensuring the usage of network resource. This paper provides a functional view for resource management according to the requested service type.
