Designing for responsibility: A retrospective case study on modulating responsible innovations through design

This study examines how responsibility is conceptualized and operationalized in a design-led technology development through a retrospective analysis of a biofaçade system as a case-study. Using value-sensitive design (VSD) and the values hierarchy framework, it traces how ethical, environmental, and social values were identified, negotiated, and translated into design requirements. The findings show that responsibility is not a fixed design attribute but an ongoing, reflexive practice. Operationalizing responsibility requires the negotiation of competing priorities like sustainability and affordability, efficiency and accessibility, and automation and user autonomy. The case also illustrates how responsible design practices can support adaptive governance by responding to emergent stakeholder expectations and systemic constraints. By bridging the disciplinary gap between normative ethical theories and design practice, this study offers a structured approach for integrating socio-ethical deliberation into the design and development of emerging technologies, reinforcing the critical role of design in shaping inclusive and sustainable futures.
