The raise of the steel prices as well as the competition between the suppliers to the automotive industry force the forging industry to efficiently exploit the steel material. Therefor, forgings of grade 3 (parts of the long form) particularly should be preformed before drop forging. This paper shall give an overview of techniques of mass distribution suitable for preforming. The ranges of application are presented and a comparison between roll forging and cross rolling is given.
