Title

Renovation of a school building with transparent insulation in Leipzig

Abstract
After 1970, the majority of all residential dwellings and public buildings in the former German Democratic Republic was built as standardized blocks with prefabricated building elements. Most of these buildings show a very high heating energy consumption and severe damage of the exterior walls. The retrofit of a school building in Leipzig with 300 square m of transparent insulation (TI) introduces the possibility of covering a large portion of the buildings' energy demand by solar energy. New standardized constructional solutions for TI facades and the huge number of buildings which have to be retrofitted in Germany may lead to a broader market penetration of tranparent insulation within the next years.
