Title

Collecting and Analyzing User Insights

Abstract
User requirements are based on information about user and stakeholder groups, their goals and tasks, and the environments in which the system will be used. This chapter provides an overview of techniques for collecting and analyzing user requirements. It is dedicated to the purpose and outcome of user requirements analyses: What are the established formats for documenting user research insights and user requirements? And what information is required when specifying user requirements? The chapter explores the methods for collecting the required information. Use requirements are collected through user research activities, ideally already at early phases of the development process using different approaches that can be differentiated based on their methodology, the type of data recoded as well as their setup (laboratory vs. natural environment). The user-centered development of a system always includes a combination of different methods for collecting, analyzing, and documenting user requirements.
