As far as formaldehyde emission is concerned wood-based panels for years are ruled by statutory regulations. In 1980 already the ETB guideline (on harmonized technical construction regulations) was defined for emission measurements in the large test chamber. Besides, derived test methods were developed for a simplified determination of the formaldehyde release or the formaldehyde content respectively. The regulation on hazardous materials of 1986 and the publication of the Federal Health Bulletin of October 1991 "Test methods for wood-based materials" resulted in the binding character of the material parameter tests as well as of the limit values mentioned here regarding all wood-based materials and the products manufactured therefrom.
