Energetic improvement of the building structure (EnSan) implementation of the demonstration projects in Germany - experience and first validation measurement results

The high energy use for heating and domestic hot water of existing buildings (particularly those buildings constructed before 1978) can be dramatically reduced. The buildings that were retrofitted within the framework of the demonstration project "Energetic Improvement of the Building Structure (EnSan)" point out the options and strategies currently available for reducing the energy consumption of buildings. It was found that not single measures concerning only the building enevelope or technical equipment will assure success: rather, integral retrofitting concepts including both the building skin and the technical systems in conjunction with coordinated measures will be most successful.
