Title

Green polyols for polyurethane applications and nanomaterials

Abstract
The structural diversity of polyurethanes stems from the wide choice of polyols that, together with isocyanates, comonomers and structural fillers, give rise to intriguing properties. Polyurethanes are nanomaterials characterized by formation of nanostructures. The kit of sustainable building blocks available for the assembly of polyurethanes was extended by the recent introduction of polyethercarbonate polyols. Interestingly, carbon dioxide is utilized in a green and more sustainable approach to polyethercarbonate polyol production. New opportunities for polyurethanes arise from the presence of carbonate groups. Polyurethane nanomaterials comprise polyurethane matrices with embedded nanomaterials that impart particular properties. With excellent biocompatibility, polyurethane nanoparticles are increasingly finding intriguing applications as shuttles for molecular components and in biomaterial applications.
