To control the interior ballistics of tank gun ammunition using granular propellant often the pressure difference between the breech of the gun and a position close to the projectile base is measured. The origin of this differential pressure is explained together with the parameters by which it is influenced. It is described under which conditions a correlation can be made between the differential pressure and the grain pressure (intergranular stress) and how the potential hazard of too high pressures in the gun, caused by breaking propellant grains, can be estimated.
