Title
Release of chemical compounds and particulate matter
Abstract
During processing and use of wood and wood-based materials, the release of chemical compounds and particulate matter is of great importance with respect to occupational and home hygiene. This chapter handles the relevant aspects, beginning with the chemical compounds in the material. Here, constituents of natural wood, as well as compounds for manufacturing wood-based panels, such as from adhesives and coatings, are taken into account. The relevant analytical methods are described for the determination of emissions of organic, inorganic compounds, and wood dust. In addition, test chambers and cells are important tools to set up a defined environment for emission testing and assessment. During processing, particles respectively wood dust can be emitted, mainly by shattering of the wood cells. Occupational exposure limit (OEL) values have been set up particularly for hardwood dust, in many countries. Moreover, emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from products have a significant influence on the indoor climate and air quality, and therefore are highly relevant for measures toward a healthy environment for consumers and inhabitants. Regulations and guidelines have been derived to ensure acceptable living conditions with respect to indoor air quality. However, questions are still open to further research, for example, which parameters besides emission rates from building products have to be considered for a comprehensive understanding of indoor air quality.
