Laser-assisted Micro-forming

This chapter describes the applications of laser-assisted heating to the forming processes as well as a fusion joining process. Firstly, laser sources, optical systems, and tools used for laser-assisted forming are described, being followed by presenting three kinds of processes - laser-assisted micro-stamping, laser-assisted micro-embossing, and laser-induced fusion bonding. These deal with various kinds of materials, including polymers, glass, metals, ceramics, etc. Merits of the applications and limitations to each technology are also discussed.
