The report reviews various pulsed light sources which have been developed at EMI for use in high-speed photography. 1. high-intensity point light source of short duration for shadow photography in ballistics, 2. high-intensity point light source with adjustable light duration for use in schlieren, shadow and interferometer setups, combined with a rotating mirror framing camera, 3. diffuse ultra-short pulsed light sources for use in reflected-light and schlieren color photography, 4. high-frequency laser stroboscope for studying self-luminous processes in ballistics, and 5. a high-intensity flash soft x-ray machine for improving the contrast of flash radiographs when recording rapid events in low-density media.-The efficiency of these newly developed instruments is illustrated by numerous examples.
