Precision machining of glass for optical applications

Abstract
The European market for optical components is characterised by small quantities, coupled with high levels of precision and geometrical diversity. The geometries to be manufactured, will become increasingly complex and the levels of accuracy required, look set to rise accordingly. However, there is a lack of continuous process chains, particularly for the manufacture of more complex surfaces such as those with aspherical shapes. Ultra-precision grinding, polishing and blank pressing are the techniques most commonly used to manufacture optical components. The paper deals with the latest research results of these technologies and the challenges that has to be solved for an industrial establishment.
